Clients who use hardware wallets primarily for long-term holding — checking in once or twice a year — frequently arrive with firmware several versions behind manufacturer recommendations. This is not automatically dangerous, but it creates compatibility problems when they eventually need to sign a transaction.
What Outdated Firmware Causes
Companion apps may refuse to connect. New address formats or token standards may not display correctly. In rare cases, security patches address known vulnerabilities that remain exploitable on older versions.
Our Protocol
During every assessment, we record the installed firmware version and compare it against the manufacturer’s current release. We note the gap in your report and explain update steps, but we do not perform updates during the session unless you explicitly request hands-on guidance.
A Practical Suggestion
Even if you are not transacting, power on your device quarterly and confirm it still accepts your PIN. Pair this habit with our assessment schedule so firmware status is documented by a third party.
